Skin Secret: Oil Washing

It’s easy to get the idea that if we apply oil to our skin, we make it “oily” and “greasy”.

But guess what? That’s not true. Using oils on your face can actually help balance and tone your skin!

In fact, when we strip our skin of the natural oils it needs to protect and care for itself, our skin begins to overproduce oil. So in a way, we’re bringing this oiliness on ourselves! So in our mission to glow up and have luminous beautiful skin, I want to teach you a technique I love using: Oil washing.

Oil washing is exactly what it sounds like. You’ll be washing your face…with oil.

You might be wondering, why would you wash your face with oil?

Oil washing is a wonderful way to balance dry or oily skin, clear up acne-prone skin, and reduce fine lines. Many people report feeling like their skin is tighter after using this technique.

I used to have very sensitive skin and I was always dealing with little acne bumps. They weren’t huge but they were annoying and I felt like my skin would break out no matter what I did!

I had a lot of sensitivities to skincare products and even expensive products would often give me a rash. I had this problem until I began Oil washing and started taking a high-quality supplement every day to balance my gut health. If you have sensitive skin, I encourage you to try this method out and see if it works for your skin too!

Try it every day for a week and let me know what you think. You only need a few ingredients…

What you’ll need:

  • Small Glass bottle with dropper

  • 2 tablespoons Castor oil (I like this website for purchasing carrier oils)

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil or Jojoba depending on your skin type - Use Jojoba if your skin is very dry and uneven, or use Olive oil if you have a medium or greasier skin type

  • doTERRA essential oils (I highly suggest using Tea Tree, Geranium and Juniper Berry oils together)

I suggest using Tea Tree, Geranium and Juniper Berry essential oils because they are toning and clarifying.

Tea Tree essential oil is cleansing and good for skin that is acne prone. No matter what type of acne you have your skin can benefit from an astringent oil like Tea Tree! Geranium balances sebum production so it is helpful for oily or dry skin by bringing the skin back into a balanced state, and Juniper Berry oil can be particularly effective if you have skin that is on the greasier side.

How to use:

Combine Castor oil and Jojoba (or Olive) oils in small glass bottle. Add 5 drops each Tea Tree, Geranium and Juniper Berry essential oils, cover and shake.

Massage a little bit of the oil into a dry face for 1 minute, then cover your face with a hot, wet towel for 1 minute and let the steam from the hot towel open your pores.

Then, rinse your face with cold water. Some people like to moisturize immediately after oil washing if they have particularly dry or weathered skin.
